almost 10 years ago, he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer. it shattered me to the point where watching my usual slate of shows and movies sent me into relentless anxiety spirals.

I knew of hallmark movies at the time, but not what they were called — just that there was a channel out there dedicated to lighter, softer watches that might offset the emotional black hole I was trapped in. after googling a lot of random search terms, I found the hallmark channel website and went straight to the movies page.

first up was a country wedding. then a bride for christmas. then [in no particular order] love’s complicated, summer villa, surprised by love, love on the sidelines, like cats & dogs, destination wedding, love at the shore, moonlight in vermont, and so it went. each projected a sense of comfort and safety into my life at a time when neither were anywhere to be found.

hallmark movies have balanced the scales throughout every wrecking ball that’s rocked my life since: losing dre. losing my dad. burning out. losing my career. being displaced by a fire. living in poverty.

I’ve noticed that certain hallmark movies are especially soothing to my nervous system — those set in bookstores and coastal towns, in particular. ditto on beaches and ranches. but hunting down just the right hallmark movie when you need it most is an art form when you live outside the united states.
